The 49ers’ local newspaper has been suggesting the 49ers refund SBL holders, and they’ve collected a large number of responses from angry fans:
The largest number of complaints seem to focus on the sun, high ticket prices, poor winning record, and how much they miss Jim Harbaugh. While the 49ers probably don’t have enough money to refund all of the angry seat license owners, there appears to be a large number of fans who have stopped making financing payments on their SBLs, leading the 49ers to resume ownership of those seats.
Against common sense, the team actually profits more when they abandon their seat licenses because the team can then sell the tickets on the aftermarket, as well as the seat license at the original full retail price while pocketing the 30% deposit and 3 years of financing payments.
That would be like buying a $50,000 car with $15,000 down, making $10,000 in payments before abandoning the loan, and then the bank gets the car back and can sell it again for $50,000. Because of interest, the bank actually makes almost $100,000 from selling a $50,000 car.
